Octavia Butler is one of my favorite authors. “Dawn” is probably my favorite, but I love all of her work.
This is a very straight-forward portrait. The nebula behind her was a last-minute concept. I wanted something super colorful, but not a direct take on her actual novels. Afterwards, I was reminded that she won a Nebula Ward and I decided that just fit perfectly. The font I used for her name is an homage to great science fiction book covers I love.
Please go check out Octavia Butler’s books. They’re not the typical “Star Wars” type of science fiction, they deal with real (eerily current) issues and tons of human emotion. Dystopian futures, vampires, aliens who want to become symbiotes to humans… just really deeply emotion-driven storylines. We lost her too soon.
